I think Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is the better game, but sometimes I'll be in the mood for something more story driven, and other times I will feel like playing something mechanics / grinding heavy. Of course, there's very little narrative to speak of. Testing out different job+subjob combinations is fun, and going over your party roster to find builds that are good for a character while also making sure you're covering as many weapon types and magical elements as possible was actually really fun for me, and I enjoyed looking for secret dungeons, caves, shrines, etc around the map. Octopath can be a lot of fun if you're the person who likes playing around with min/maxing character builds. The story, music, art design, and combat do help you forgive the pacing issues, though. Sometimes it feels like you go hours without a stretch of really "playing" the game more than 2-3 minutes at a time. The first 15 hours of the game is swamped with ridiculously hand-holdy tutorials, and much of the game after that is frequent segments of walking 100 ft, small cutscene, walk 200 small feet, another small cutscene, repeat. I'm about 40 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and mostly really enjoying it, but it has some major pacing issues. It's also received staggeringly good reviews, making it a must-play for any JPRG fan. XI S is a great place to start, since it hearkens back to classic JRPGs while pushing the genre into new and interesting places. Dragon Quest games created the blueprint for the entire genre, but the series has struggled to find an audience in the West. The best JRPG on Switch is, hands-down, Dragon Quest XI S, a timed exclusive that is coming to PS4 and Xbox One later this year. The game has classic turn-based combat and relationship mechanics similar to Fire Emblem: Three Houses or Persona 5, but it has the added feature of fighting from inside giant mechs. Thankfully, there are character profiles and story synopses from earlier games to fill players in on the story, so even newcomers can enjoy it. Trails of Cold Steel III is the newest game in the Trails series to release in the West, and it's the first entry in this highly acclaimed series to make it to Switch.
